He Fears The Number 13

King suffers from “triskaidekaphobia,” which translates to being afraid of the number 13. In the instances when he’s writing, he will never step on page 13 or on a page that’s a multiple of 13. When he’s reading, he also won’t stop on pages in which the digits add up to 13, such as 94 or 193.

He Owns Three Radio Stations

Stephen and his wife Tabitha own three radio stations in Maine. WKIT is one of them and has been dubbed as “Stephen King’s Rock and Roll Station.”

He Almost Tossed Carrie In The Trash Forever

King’s wife, Tabitha, discovered the crumpled pages of Carrie in a trashcan. After noticing how much potential the story had, she was able to help guide him back on the right track in order to rewrite and finish the story.

He Was Hit By A Van in 1999

While walking down a road by his summer home in North Lovell, he was struck by a van and suffered a head injury, broken ribs, a punctured lung, and broken hip bones. Bryan Smith claimed to have been distracted by his dog when his van veered to the side and caused the accident. King underwent five operations and remained in the hospital for roughly three weeks.

He Tries To Write A Minimum of 2,000 Words A Day

King states that “only under dire circumstances do I allow myself to shut down before I get my 2,000 words.”  He finishes a 180,000-word novel in three months.  He says, “If I don’t write every day, the characters begin to stale off in my mind—they begin to seem like characters instead of real people.  The tale’s narrative edge starts to rust and I begin to lose my hold on the story’s plot and pace.  Worst of all, the excitement of spinning something new begins to fade.  The work starts to feel like work, and for most writers that is the smooch of death.” – Source: Authormagazine.org

He Was In A Band With Other Writers

The Rock Bottom Remainders was the band King was in and lasted from 1992 to 2012. Other notable band members included Amy Tan, Mitch Albom, Dave Berry, and even Matt Groening, to name a few. They covered songs ranging from “Louie Louie” to “Stand By Me.”

King’s Famous Quotes:

And as a writer, one of the things that I’ve always been interested in doing is actually invading your comfort space. Because that’s what we’re supposed to do. Get under your skin, and make you react.
I am the literary equivalent of a Big Mac and fries.
I recognize terror as the finest emotion and so I will try to terrorize the reader. But if I find that I cannot terrify, I will try to horrify, and if I find that I cannot horrify, I’ll go for the gross-out. I’m not proud.

We make up horrors to help us cope with the real ones.
